What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are ultra-thin shells that we can place over your teeth to improve the shape, color, or other cosmetic features. A treated tooth can turn from looking worn, misshapen, or discolored into a radiant tooth looking at its best.
Some of the top ways our patients use veneers include:
  • To cover up deep stains or discoloration
  • To reshape a tooth for a balanced smile
  • To close small gaps between teeth
  • To repair minor chips or damage
  • To replace damaged enamel
  • And more.

How to Get Dental Veneers

Getting dental veneers will typically take at least two visits to our office, with the entire process taking under 3 weeks in many cases.
Consultation
We start with taking the time to fully evaluate your case, your needs, and your goals. Moving forward with veneers is a big step, and we want to ensure it is the right one for you.
The target teeth will need to be cleaned. And any decay will need to be addressed first. Then, we rough up the enamel. This part allows the veneer to have more surface to stick to for a sturdier hold.
We take impressions of your tooth to custom-make a perfectly shaped veneer. You also can choose from among different color shades to get the tone that feels best to you.
Once we receive your veneers back from our lab, you can come in for a test fit. If you like the color and fit, we can affix them to your tooth that same day!

FAQs

How long do they last?

Depending on the material, veneers can last over 10 years. Healthy dental habits can prolong their lifespan.

Veneers are ideal for patients who want notable improvements in their smile. We may recommend alternatives for smaller changes, such as teeth whitening or bonding.
The cost of your veneers will depend on several individual factors. While we cannot give a blanket quote, we do provide a commitment-free, personalized quote during the consultation that takes into account your individual procedure details.

In the majority of cases, dental veneers are not covered by insurance as they are considered a purely cosmetic and elective procedure. However, some insurance plans might partially cover veneers if they are used for cracked or broken tooth restoration and if you can provide proof that the procedure is a medical necessity. We recommend discussing your particular case with your dentist and your dental insurance company to determine if you can expect coverage.

If insurance coverage is an important factor for you, we recommend considering dental bonding as an alternative to veneers, as bonding is more likely to be covered than dental veneers.

High-quality porcelain veneers typically look very natural in the mouth as they are tailored for your particular facial anatomy, bite, tooth shape, skin tone, concerns, and goals. Also, porcelain is slightly translucent and reflects the light very similarly to natural tooth enamel. When considering dental veneers, keep in mind that one-size-fits-all, very uniform, or overly white veneers will inevitably look less natural. If you value a natural look, we recommend opting for fully customized veneers. In this case, a skilled technician will add slight irregularities to the surface and shape of your veneers to mimic the irregularities of natural teeth.

The most popular material for dental veneers is porcelain, as it is stain-resistant, durable, and closely resembles the appearance of natural teeth enamel. Porcelain veneers typically last for 10 to 15 years if the care is adequate. Also, veneers can be made of resin composite (the same material that is used for dental fillings). Resin composite veneers are typically less costly than the porcelain option, but they are not as stain-resistant and last for 5 to 10 years.

Veneers do not damage your natural teeth, but they permanently alter your teeth. Before veneers can be placed, a portion of your tooth enamel will be removed to create space for veneers to fit comfortably. Since our teeth can not live without their natural enamel, they will have to be permanently protected by veneers or crowns, even though they will remain healthy and functional underneath the restorations.

Caring for dental veneers correctly is important as it will help maintain their original appearance and function for longer. We recommend adhering to the following simple rules to establish a good dental veneer care routine:

  • Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day.
  • Opt for a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste (such ingredients as baking soda or charcoal can create micro scratches on the surface of your veneers, leading to discoloration and staining).
  • Floss your teeth thoroughly every evening.
  • Use a water flosser every evening before flossing with a thread and brushing.
  • Do not use whitening products on your veneers.
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks and rinse your mouth or brush your teeth immediately after the meal if you consume any of such products.
  • Avoid hard and crunchy foods and never use your teeth as tools.
  • Visit your dentist twice a year for professional cleanings, checkups, and fluoride treatments.
  • Use a mouth guard if you experience bruxism or play contact or extreme sports.
